In British Columbia, the most common means of becoming a landscape architect is to complete an accredited landscape architecture degree program, followed by a period of internship, before pursuing licensure with the BCSLA following graduation. The Landscape Architecture Program at the University of British Columbia is located in the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA). The School operates as a distinct, focused professional and research unit within the Faculty of Applied Science. Both a Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA), the Master of Advanced Studies in Landscape Architecture (MASLA) are offered by the school, and the related undergraduate Bachelor of Environmental Design (ENDS) shares some facilities and faculty.

The Landscape Architecture program was founded in 1979, offering an accredited professional degree in at the undergraduate level.  As the century closed, the school began a transition period, and professional degrees in Landscape Architecture are now completed at the graduate level. The interdisciplinary Bachelor of Environmental Design, which provides undergraduate studies for Landscape Architecture, Architecture, and Planning was founded in 2002. Complementary programs and courses , including the Horticulture program at Kwantlen University College, Garden Design Certificate at UBC, and the Continuing Education Urban Design Certificate from Simon Fraser Universtiy, help provide alternatives to be engaged in the Landscape educational community.  The Landscape Architecture program at UBC has a distinctly international component, as students from around the world enhance the program’s global perspective. Graduates benefit from mentors that have a breadth of experience, and a community of Landscape Architects that is far-reaching and as diverse as their professional work.
