EVERGREEN CORRECTIONS FACILITY CANADA WOMEN'S GARDEN

Matsqui, BC

Tracy Penner, Intern Landscape Architect, 2004

The site plan and garden designs for this relocated correctional facility resulted from a collaboration between women prisoners and landscape architects. The resulting visioning process, its implementation and long term maintenance of the gardens have been planned to provide the women with purpose, peace and hope, and the opportunity to build marketable skills in both horticulture and agriculture. At the request of the women, the first stage of the project was construction of a footbridge symbolizing transition, surrounded by a rain garden of native plants.
