McArthur Island Park, Kamloops , BC

Urban Systems 1992

A hot, dry climate combined with the need to conserve water set the stage for a Xeriscape Demonstration Garden in Kamloops. The Xeriscape Garden is situated in a high profile location in McArthur Island Park, exhibiting over 90 different varieties of drought tolerant perennials, dryland grasses, trees and native shrubs. The garden is organized as a series of "hydrozones" protected to reduce irrigation water use by 25 - 75% below that needed for conventional landscapes. The garden also includes a feature sundial, and a gazebo with interpretive panels explaining xeriscape principles.
