West Mall, UBC Campus, Vancouver
Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg 1993
The First Nations House of Learning on UBC Vancouver’s campus incorporates traditional cultural and natural symbols into a site design that features boardwalks, river cobbles, native plantings and water, symbolizing a mountain stream falling towards the sea. Located within the old University of British Columbia arboretum, the development emphasizes protection, preservation, and on-site relocation of existing mature trees. Built forms are carefully integrated with the existing landscape to blend the experience both physically and aesthetically.
