West Mall, UBC Campus, Vancouver
Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg 1993
The First Nations House of Learning on UBC Vancouver’s campus incorporates traditional cultural and natural symbols into the design. The site design features boardwalks, river cobbles, native plantings and water, symbolizing a mountain stream falling towards the sea. Located within the old University of British Columbia arboretum, the development emphasizes protection, preservation, and on-site relocation of existing mature trees. Built forms are carefully integrated with the existing landscape to blend the experience both physically and aesthetically.
