Portal Park derives its name from its location above the north entrance to the CPR tunnel under Dunsmuir Street. The tunnel opened in 1932 to facilitate the movement of CPR freight trains across the downtown peninsula, was retracked to accommodate BC Transit Sky Train. The pavilion commemorates the City of Vancouver's Centennial in 1986.
