Hidden from the street view, Library Square offers a new concept in 'greening' public buildings. As seen from adjacent towers, the inaccessible 30,000 square foot green roof features with a 'river' of grasses and groundcover that simulates the mighty Fraser River. The Library Roof was designed to improve air quality. absorb heat, and lower ambient temperature. Fourteen inches of light weight growing medium on the roof acts as an enormous sponge slowing runoff, reducing stain on city storm sewers as well as acting as a reservoir to hold water for the plants.
